The Tyranny of Liberalism
Descends on the European Union
by Christopher A. Ferrara
On January 26, 2007 LifesiteNews.com reported the alarming news that “a member of France’s ruling party has been fined almost $4,000 for comments opposing homosexuality, under the country’s hate speech law.”
The French parliamentarian, Christian Vanneste, was fined by a local court for having stated his opposition to a homosexual “marriage” performed by the mayor of a town in southwest France, which marriage was later declared illegal.
Vanneste’s “crime” consisted of expressing the opinion that the purported marriage was objectionable because “homosexuality was ‘inferior’ to heterosexuality” and that the practice of homosexual “marriage” would be “dangerous for humanity if it was pushed to the limit.”
Vanneste’s criminal punishment resulted from a suit filed against him by “three homosexual and lesbian activist groups … under the law criminalizing the incitement of hatred against minorities homosexuality had recently been included under that law.”
Now mark this well: a member of the French Parliament has incurred a criminal sanction for making justified remarks fully supported by Catholic teaching and Holy Scripture critical of the abomination of homosexual “marriage.” Where does that leave the average French citizen? Obviously, in grave peril of religious persecution.
The Lifesite story goes on to report that none other than a former Soviet dissident, Vladimir Bukovsky, has remarked that “The introduction of ‘hate speech’ laws in France and Britain symbolize the dismantling of democracy that is rapidly underway in Europe …”
Bukovsky further remarked that “The Soviet Union used to be a state run by ideology [it still is!]. Today’s ideology of the European Union is social-democratic, statist, and a big part of it is also political correctness … I watch very carefully how political correctness spreads and becomes an oppressive ideology …”
Irony of ironies. It takes a former Soviet dissident to point out that the errors of Russia of which Our Lady spoke at Fatima have metastasized and transformed themselves into an oppressive ideology that now tyrannizes all of Europe. Here we see the ugly visage of “classical liberalism” revealed, once its smiling mask of “tolerance” is removed.
For in the end, liberalism (as the Catholic intellectual Pierre Manent has observed) is nothing other than the grand project of “the radical discrediting of the Church’s political claims …” that is, the Church’s claims that she is commissioned by Christ Himself to make disciples of all nations, and that the rulers of all nations, especially Catholic ones, are subject to her moral authority. In short, the Social Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Without the Catholic Church to counter the excesses of government within an organic union of Church and State, only very recently destroyed in historical terms, we can only watch and wait for our turn as omnipotent governments, in the name of “liberty,” oppress anyone who dares to transgress the official state religion of Tolerationism that has been installed in every nation in the Western world.
As we enter the 23rd year following the Consecration-that-Wasn’t in 1984, the tyrannical EU, advancing a new form of totalitarianism, is picking up where Soviet Russia left off. And make no mistake about it: they are coming for the Catholics. Not only in Europe, but here in America. And it will all be done in the name of liberal democracy, which “emancipated” society from the Catholic Church. This, they tell us, is “liberty.” May God save us from it by finally inspiring enough Catholics to pray, promote and persevere in doing what it takes to finally achieve the Consecration of Russia in the manner Our Lady of Fatima insisted upon.
