A Harbinger of the Apocalypse?

by Christopher A. Ferrara
July 1, 2010

It sounds like the plot of a lame TV movie: A mysterious stranger by the obviously phony name of "R. C. Christian" walks into the office of a granite finishing company to advise that he and a "secret group" wish to hire the company to build a massive granite monument containing instructions in eight different languages for rebuilding civilization in a post-apocalyptic world. The monument must be built to withstand catastrophic events. Of course, it will be hugely expensive, but the money will be made available, and don't ask how. A local banker, sworn to secrecy for life, is enlisted to handle the money transfers to finance the project, which arrive mysteriously from numerous banks all over the country so that the ultimate source of the funds will be untraceable.

The monument, consisting of enormous vertical granite slabs arranged around a center stone and topped by capstone, must be built according to astronomical calculations so complex that the granite company will have to hire a professional astronomer to get them right. The monument must act as a compass, a calendar and a clock. It will feature a hole through which the North Star is always visible, a slot positioned so that a beam of sunlight shines through it only on the days of the solstice and the equinox, and a 7/8 inch hole in the capstone through which the suns will shine at noon each day, with the beam landing on the day of the week carved into the center stone.

And written on the granite slabs in those eight different languages will be a strange set of "commandments" that savor all at once of Rosicrucian mysticism, the so-called Enlightenment, Freemasonry, libertarianism, socialism, environmentalism, Luciferianism, and the New World Order:

  • Maintain Humanity Under 500,000,000 In Perpetual Balance With Nature.

  • Guide Reproduction Wisely — Improving Fitness And Diversity.

  • Rule Passion — Faith — Tradition — And All Things With Tempered Reason

  • Protect People And Nations With Fair Laws And Just Courts.

  • Let All Nations Rule Internally Resolving External Disputes In A World Court.

  • Avoid Petty Laws And Useless Officials.

  • Balance Personal Rights With Social Duties.

  • Prize Truth — Beauty — Love — Seeking Harmony With The Infinite.

  • Be Not A Cancer On The Earth

  • Leave Room For Nature — Leave Room For Nature.
  • A lame TV movie plot indeed. Except that every word of it is true. The thing really exists. It was built in 1980, and they call it "The Georgia Guidestones." You can see it today, sitting there massively on five acres of county land in Elbert County, Georgia. Even Yoko Ono has been there in tribute, which tells Catholics all they need to know about what they should think of it. The builder, one Joe Fendley, is now deceased, while the banker, one Wyatt Martin, vows to take the real name of "R. C. Christian" (from whom he has not heard since 9/11) and his secret papers and associates to the grave.

What does it all mean? It is impossible to say for certain. Is the monument really a set of instructions for people surviving apocalyptic events about to befall us? Or is it a call for a planned reduction of the world's population from 6.8 billion to 500 million — more than 90%?

This much is clear: Some very serious people with some very serious money, operating under strict secrecy, have constructed a modern and far more sophisticated version of the Druid monument at Stonehenge which they have designed to withstand, and provide "guidance" to humanity following, a global catastrophe.

And what is also certain is that the "instructions" the monument presents to what its sponsors imagine will be a small remnant of humanity, hardly contemplate a world in which the Law of the Gospel will be the guide.

Chalk up the "Georgia Guidestones," then, to yet another sign of the times — the times in which, as Pius XII warned back in 1949, "the wickedness of perverse men has reached a degree of impiety that is unbelievable and absolutely unknown in other times."

And consider another sign of the times: the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, who warned the Church and all humanity of precisely the annihilation of "various nations" if Her request for the Consecration of Russia were not granted.

Perhaps the mysterious patrons of the Georgia Guidestones were looking ahead to that event, displaying the diabolical cunning of "the children of this world," who "are wiser in their generation than the children of light," as Our Lord warned the faithful in His parable of the unjust steward. So have we been warned as well by the Mother of God at Fatima.
