Speaking Truth to Power

The great triumph of the modern nation-state has been its practical subjugation of the Catholic Church via a regime of “religious liberty” that allows the Church a certain private “space” in which to operate, provided the Church agrees that the civil power shall reign supreme and unchallenged by any spiritual authority.
The new Pope recognizes that this is the devil’s bargain and he has refused to abide by it. As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, the former Cardinal Bergoglio was a fierce opponent of Argentina’s leftist government on social issues, which brought him into direct conflict with husband and wife tandem of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and her late husband, former Néstor Kirchner.
As The Washington Post notes in an article published March 15, Cardinal Bergoglio has consistently shown a “willingness to butt heads with secular leaders whose politics conflict with the Roman Catholic Church.” Nowhere was this more dramatically apparent than in the Cardinal’s letter opposing the legalization of “gay marriage” in Argentina (an opposition that was ultimately unsuccessful).
“The identity of the family, and its survival, are in jeopardy here,” wrote the Cardinal. What was involved, he warned, was not mere proposed legislation, but rather a “clear rejection of the law of God, engraved in our hearts... a ‘move’ of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.” When was the last time we heard a high-ranking Catholic prelate — any high-ranking Catholic prelate — speak of the law of God as opposed to “the dignity of the human person”? When was the last time any Catholic prelate attributed evil policies to the influence of the devil, who seems to have disappeared from the universe if the sermons and other pronouncements of post-conciliar churchmen are any indication.
Cardinal Bergoglio even dared to call down the Holy Ghost upon the Kirchner regime: “Jesus tells us that, in order to defend us from this lying accuser, he will send us the Spirit of Truth. Today, the Nation... needs the special assistance of the Holy Ghost that may place the light of Truth amid the shadows of error; it needs this Advocate who may defend us from the enchantment of so many sophisms with which this bill is being justified, and which confuse and deceive even people of good will.”
Imagine someone like Cardinal Dolan of New York calling upon the Holy Ghost to enlighten the leaders of the United States in order to defeat “gay marriage” or the “contraceptive mandate” of Obamacare. Instead, however, Dolan invited Obama to the Al Smith dinner, gave him place of honor at the dais, sat next to him, and laughed uproariously at his professionally written gag lines. The impotence of the American Catholic hierarchy before the power of the State is as pathetic as it is infuriating, and yet they all hail America’s supposed regime of “religious freedom.”
Only when Catholic churchmen awake from their stupor and begin to preach truth to power can we have any hope of reversing the rapid slide of the once Christian West into a pit of utter depravity. The first step in that regard must be the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by the Pope and all the bishops of the world. By that one gesture alone, the tyranny of the modern nation-state could be overthrown without firing a shot. It will be the greatest revolution since the Church’s fearless saints and martyrs converted pagan Rome into the heart of Christendom.
