Pope Leo’s Prophecy Come True

by Christopher A. Ferrara
March 13, 2015

The redoubtable Mike Church has become a veritable apostle of the Social Kingship of Christ on his radio talk show at Sirius Channel 125, where I have been a frequent guest – an astonishing development in the midst of the “dictatorship or relativism.” Mike has alerted me to a news story about the capitulation of both the Republican Party and the United States military to the “gay rights” agenda.

It seems a number of very prominent Republicans have signed on to an amicus (friend of the court) brief supporting “gay marriage” in a pending suit while, at the same time, a Protestant military chaplain has been advised that he will be terminated from the his post because of “intolerance.” The “intolerance” consists of his spiritual advice that sexual relations of any kind outside of marriage are immoral. In other words, the Protestant minister is being discharged from the military for speaking the truth.

This morning [March 12], on the Mike Church Show, I noted that what this story reflects is a reality about America and every Western nation that is now revealing itself in all its horror: that a house built on sand will collapse in a most catastrophic fashion.  As Christ Himself warns in the Gospel of Matthew:

Every one therefore that heareth these my words, and doth them, shall be likened to a wise man that built his house upon a rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded on a rock.
And every one that heareth these my words, and doth them not, shall be like a foolish man that built his house upon the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall thereof.

And great was the fall thereof.  We are, at this very moment in history, witnessing the fall of an entire civilization. As Pope Benedict XVI warned, not long before his mysterious “resignation” from the papacy: “moral consensus is collapsing, consensus without which juridical and political structures cannot function. Consequently the forces mobilized for the defence of such structures seem doomed to failure…. The very future of the world is at stake.”  But, in keeping with the resounding silence of churchmen about the Social Kingship of Christ since Vatican II, Benedict did not give the solution to the civilizational crisis: the guidance of the Church that Christ founded to make disciples of all nations.

The Church, founded on Christ, is the Rock on which a house rightly built can withstand the storms and floods that are destroying the once Christian West today.  As Pope Leo XIII warned 127 years ago in his prophetic encyclical Libertas (On the Nature of Human Liberty), the end result of “tolerance” in the modern liberal sense is that the only thing that will enjoy no tolerance is the truth and the Church that defends it:

And as to tolerance, it is surprising how far removed from the equity and prudence of the Church are those who profess what is called liberalism. For, in allowing that boundless license of which We have spoken, they exceed all limits, and end at last by making no apparent distinction between truth and error, honesty and dishonesty.
And because the Church, the pillar and ground of truth, and the unerring teacher of morals, is forced utterly to reprobate and condemn tolerance of such an abandoned and criminal character, they calumniate her as being wanting in patience and gentleness, and thus fail to see that, in so doing, they impute to her as a fault what is in reality a matter for commendation.
But, in spite of all this show of tolerance, it very often happens that, while they profess themselves ready to lavish liberty on all in the greatest profusion, they are utterly intolerant toward the Catholic Church, by refusing to allow her the liberty of being herself free.

We now see the results of a regime that “tolerates” everything but the truth that, as Our Lord teaches, makes us free.  To quote Leo: “If unbridled license of speech and of writing be granted to all, nothing will remain sacred and inviolate… Thus, truth being gradually obscured by darkness, pernicious and manifold error, as too often happens, will easily prevail.”

As Leo makes clear, there are only two alternatives in the moral life of nations: either the State will defend truth and oppose error, or it will defend error and oppose truth. The State is always in the business of enforcing morality. The only question is which morality it will enforce: God’s morality or the morality of fallen man.  The latter has clearly prevailed because men and nations have turned their back on the Church as “the pillar and ground of the truth.”

This is the very heart of the Message of Fatima: “In the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to Me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”  The Triumph of the Immaculate Heart can occur only when, following the Consecration of Russia, not only “that poor nation” but our entire civilization, now in the grips of what John Paul II called “silent apostasy,” returns to the solid rock on which it can avoid the fate Our Lady predicted if Her requests were not granted: “various nations will be annihilated.”
